A leading expert in the drug and alcohol recovery service is flying the flag for Doncaster at the 62nd Commission on Narcotics Drugs (CND) event in Vienna on March 20.
Stuart Green, Service Manager at the Doncaster-based Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service, will be sharing the work that is being done in the borough to support the recovery of people with a drug and/ or alcohol addiction, to help them to become valued citizens in their communities.
The event, which is being held in Austria at the United Nations, will focus on creating Recovery Cities, an innovative model which aims to nurture sustainable connections and networks by the people themselves at a town/ city level.
Stuart said: “Being part of the Recovery Cities venture puts us at the forefront of the recovery movement. Sharing the work that we do in Doncaster on an international platform supports our ambitions to create a safer and more supportive recovery community for the people of Doncaster and beyond.”
Tim Young, Chief Executive of the Alcohol and Drug Service which works together with Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust to run Aspire, said: “I am very proud of what we are achieving by giving those who have an addiction the best possible chance to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.”
Examples of Aspire’s work which will be presented at the CND include the annual Recovery Games, with this year’s date set for August 16 at Hatfield Marina in Doncaster. These games celebrate people in recovery and also those connected with it in a visual and fun way. On an education level the CND will hear about the Northern Recovery College, a collaboration between Professor David Best of the University of Sheffield, Dr Linda Harris from Spectrum Health Care and Aspire. The college attracts delegates from across the region to share evidence and practice-based learning, including those with lived, taught and worked experience of addictions.
