Naloxone saves first life in Doncaster service

The life of a Doncaster drug user has been saved – thanks to the quick thinking action Aspire Nurse Andrea Little who administered intramuscular opiate antidote, Naloxone.

Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service chose to go above its current contract to stock and supply Naloxone to patients as a lifesaving intervention in the community and in people’s homes.

Aspire Service Manager Stuart Green said: “Although Naloxone is not funded as a contractual requirement, we aim to be needs led wherever we can, and as we deal with people who are at high risk of overdose, which can happen when someone has a reduced tolerance, such as leaving prison, mixing drugs or after detox, we recently introduced it to our service. It certainly made a difference in this case.”

Andrea Little added: “I was pleased to be able to put my training into practice in order to achieve a positive outcome for the client. The staff members that were involved demonstrated to the public what a fantastic team we are and how efficiently we work together.”
